The short answer
If your AC is blowing warm air, short cycling, freezing up, leaking water, or making new noises, it needs a diagnosis. MasterFix technicians check the electrical parts, refrigerant, airflow, and drainage. We explain the cause and give you clear repair or replacement options, with the price, before any work begins.
When your air conditioner stops keeping up, the house gets uncomfortable fast. That's especially true in the inland and southern parts of the Santa Clara Valley, where summer afternoons run noticeably hotter than areas near the Bay. MasterFix HVAC Repair Service diagnoses and repairs central air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless systems for homeowners in San Jose and nearby cities. On every visit, we find the actual cause, explain it in plain terms, and give you clear options before any work starts. This page covers the signs that your AC needs attention, what our technicians check, how we weigh repair against replacement, what affects the cost, and what to expect when we come out.
Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair
Many AC problems start small and get worse under load. Catching them early often means a simpler repair and less chance of a breakdown on the hottest day of the year. Schedule service if you notice any of the following:
If you see ice on the lines or coil, switch the system to fan-only or turn it off and let it thaw before running cooling again. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
- Air from the vents feels warm, lukewarm, or weaker than it used to
- The system runs constantly, but the house never reaches the thermostat setting
- The outdoor unit hums or clicks, but the fan doesn't spin
- The system turns on and off every few minutes (short cycling)
- Ice forms on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
- Water pools around the indoor unit or furnace cabinet, or the vents smell musty
- You hear new noises such as grinding, squealing, rattling, or banging
- A breaker trips when the AC starts
- Electric bills are climbing even though you're using the system the same way
What Our Technicians Check
A good repair starts with a full diagnosis, not a guess. Our technicians look at the whole system, because the part that failed isn't always the root cause. A capacitor may burn out, for example, because a dirty condenser coil or a failing fan motor was overworking it. If we only replace the capacitor, the same problem can come back.
Once we know what's wrong, we walk you through what we found and show you the failed part when possible. Then we explain what we recommend and why.
- Thermostat settings, wiring, and power to the indoor and outdoor units
- Capacitors, contactors, relays, and electrical connections
- Condenser fan motor and indoor blower motor
- Refrigerant pressures and temperatures, and signs of a leak
- Condition of the condenser and evaporator coils
- Air filter, airflow, and return air
- Condensate drain line, drain pan, and float safety switch
- Compressor operation and electrical draw
- Visible ductwork, checked for disconnected or crushed sections
Repair or Replace: Making the Right Call
Most AC problems can be repaired, and we won't push a new system when a repair makes sense. Repair is usually the right choice when the system is in reasonable shape overall and the problem is a single component, such as a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, or clogged drain line.
Replacement is worth discussing in a few situations: the compressor has failed on an older system, a coil has a major refrigerant leak, repairs are becoming frequent, or the system can't keep the house comfortable even when it's working correctly. We'll give you an honest view of both paths so you can decide.
If you do replace, consider a heat pump, which cools in summer and heats in winter. That can matter later on. Under Bay Area Air District rules, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx emission standard, which in practice points toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. These rules don't require you to replace working equipment, so there's no need to act before you're ready.
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) applied only to qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025, so it isn't available for new installations. BayREN and your local clean energy provider may offer current electrification incentives. Amounts and availability change by funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before including it in any quote.
What Affects the Cost of AC Repair
We give you a clear price before starting any work. The cost of an AC repair depends on several factors:
Regular maintenance is the most reliable way to keep repair costs down. Clean coils, a fresh filter, and a clear drain line prevent many of the failures we see.
- Which part failed. A capacitor or contactor is a much smaller job than a fan motor, coil, or compressor.
- The refrigerant type and amount needed, and whether a leak has to be found and fixed first
- The equipment's age and brand, which affect part availability
- Access to the equipment, such as units in tight attics, crawlspaces, or on rooftops
- Whether the problem caused secondary damage, like a frozen coil or water damage
- Timing, including emergency visits outside regular hours
How an AC Repair Visit Works
When you contact us, we'll ask a few questions about what the system is doing and set up a time. We offer 24/7 emergency service for when waiting isn't an option, such as a breakdown during a heat wave or a household with someone who is vulnerable to heat.
At your home, the technician will talk with you about the symptoms, then diagnose the system indoors and out. Before any repair, you'll get an explanation of the problem and the price, and nothing moves forward without your approval. If the needed part is on hand, many repairs can be finished during the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you what to expect and how to keep the house as comfortable as possible in the meantime.
After the repair, we run the system, confirm that it's cooling properly, and clean up the work area. We'll also point out anything else worth keeping an eye on, so you aren't caught off guard later.
