The short answer
MasterFix repairs gas furnaces in Sunnyvale homes, from ignition and flame sensor problems to blower, airflow and safety control failures, and offers 24/7 emergency service. Bay Area Air District rules do not require you to replace a working furnace, so repair is often a sensible choice. If replacement makes more sense, we'll explain your options, including heat pumps.
Sunnyvale winters are mild, so a furnace can sit unused for months and then get switched on during the first cold, damp night of the season. That is often when problems show up: a burner that won't light, a blower that runs but pushes out cool air, or a smell that makes you hesitate. MasterFix HVAC Repair Service handles furnace repair for homes across Sunnyvale, including ZIP codes 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089. We're based in San Jose, about 10 miles southeast, and we offer 24/7 emergency service when your heat goes out at a bad time.
Furnace Problems We See in Sunnyvale Homes
The Santa Clara Valley's climate means short heating seasons with long idle stretches in between. Dust settles on burners and flame sensors, filters get forgotten, and parts that worked fine last winter can fail on the first start-up. Damp winter weather can also affect outdoor vents and condensate drains on high-efficiency units.
These are the issues homeowners most often call us about:
- Furnace won't turn on, or the thermostat calls for heat and nothing happens
- Igniter glows or clicks but the burners don't light, or they light and shut off within seconds
- Blower runs but the air coming out of the vents is cool
- Short cycling, where the furnace turns on and off repeatedly
- Loud banging, squealing or rattling during start-up or operation
- Error codes or flashing lights on the furnace control board
- Weak airflow in some rooms, often tied to filters, blower problems or duct issues
- Water around a high-efficiency furnace from a clogged condensate line
What Happens During a Furnace Repair Visit
Our technician starts by asking what you've noticed and when it started. Details like a recent filter change, a new thermostat or a specific noise help narrow things down quickly.
Next, we check the furnace from the thermostat through the burners and blower: power and safety switches, igniter and flame sensor, gas valve operation, pressure switches and venting, the blower motor and capacitor, and the filter and return air. On older units, we also inspect the heat exchanger area for signs of cracking or corrosion.
Once we find the cause, we explain what failed, what the repair involves, and whether anything else looks close to failing. You decide how to proceed before we start any work. After the repair, we run the furnace through a full heating cycle to confirm it lights, heats and shuts off correctly.
Repair or Replace? How Local Rules Factor In
Many Sunnyvale homeowners have heard about the Bay Area Air District's appliance rules and worry they'll be forced to replace their furnace. They won't. The rules do not require replacing working equipment. They apply only when an existing furnace fails or is replaced.
Under Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 onward must meet a zero-NOx emission standard. In practice, that points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. If your furnace is in reasonable shape, a repair can keep it running safely for years. If it's older, needs frequent repairs or has a serious problem such as a cracked heat exchanger, it may be worth planning ahead rather than waiting for a breakdown.
If you're weighing a heat pump, note that the federal 25C tax credit covered qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025. It is not available for new installations after that date. Bay Area homeowners can still check BayREN and their local clean energy provider for current electrification incentives. Amounts and availability change by funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before including it in any quote.
When to Call for Emergency Furnace Service
Some furnace problems shouldn't wait until morning. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside before calling us. Once the gas side is safe, we can diagnose and repair the furnace.
Call us right away if your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, you see scorch marks or soot around the furnace, the unit trips its breaker repeatedly, or someone in the home is elderly, very young or medically vulnerable and the heat is out on a cold night. Our 24/7 emergency service covers Sunnyvale and the surrounding area.
